Lemon Tree (citrus tuscan lemon)
The Lemon Tree (Citrus Tuscan Lemon) grows well in full sun in a moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It does not respond well to being positioned in a shady area and prefers a south-facing situation. It has glossy oval green leaves throughout the year.
Lemon trees flower from April to July with fragrant white, star-shaped flowers that open from red-tinted buds. The flowers are followed by bright yellow lemons which can grow up to 10cm long.
A lemon is a compact large shrub which may eventually grow up to 7m in height with a 3m spread. It is best grown in a pot so that it can be placed in a frost free place for the winter. Lemon trees prefer airy surroundings but are very sensitive to the wind and cannot stand draughts.
In reality lemon trees are more robust and less demanding than other citrus plants, especially if they are kept in optimal conditions. They make ideal gifts as you can buy them when they are relatively young and small and the resulting fruit is better in a gin & tonic than anything else!

Lemon Tree Care: Keep your lemon well-watered during the growing season and feed with a specialist lemon tree fertiliser. Citrus plants should be kept in shape with regular pruning. To increase humidity during dry spells you can spray your lemon with water (although not in direct sunlight).
Another plant variety that can be easily potted and cared for is the olive tree. In an all-green garden setting, the olive's greyish foliage and gnarled branching pattern provide a pleasant interlude. Here's some useful information on this evergreen species in our other gardening site
