Lemon Tree (citrus limon 'four seasons')
Lemon Trees (Tuscan Lemon) grow well in full sun in a moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Easier to grow than oranges, lemons do not respond well to being positioned in the shade and prefer a south-facing situation. Lemon plants have glossy oval green leaves throughout the year and flower from April to July with fragrant white, star-shaped flowers that open from red-tinted buds. The flowers are followed by bright yellow lemons which can grow up to 10cm long.
A lemon is best described as a compact large shrub and is best grown in a pot so that it can easily be moved to a frost-free environment in the winter. Lemon trees in the UK average 2m in height with a spread of about 1m across, however, with space and the correct conditions they could eventually grow up to 7m in height with a 3m spread. Lemon trees prefer airy surroundings but are sensitive to the wind and do not like draughts.
Lemon Tree Care: In posts you should ideally plant lemon trees in John Innes No 2 potting compost or similar and feed every couple of weeks with a suitable plant food. You can pot on or top-dress lemon tees in late winter. Only light pruning is required to keep your lemon tree in good shape.

In reality, lemon trees are more tolerant and less demanding than many other citrus plants, especially if they are kept in their preferred conditions. They make lovely gifts as you can buy them when they are quite young and small. As an added benefit, the resulting fruit is better in a gin & tonic than anything else.
Fertiliser: Summer citrus feed and winter citrus feed are available to keep your lemon tree in perfect health.
